IMPORTANT PRESS CONFERENCE ON SEPTEMBER 29, 2011!

The Committee on Deaf Education – Newfoundland and Labrador applauds the Liberal Party Platform which states:

SCHOOL FOR THE DEAF

A New Liberal Government will re-open the School for the Deaf, over a two-year period, working closely with parents and related groups and organizations.

This policy recognizes the demonstrable needs of the Deaf Community in this Province. It also recognizes the need to consult with parents and with the Deaf Community in developing and providing programs to meet the needs of all the Deaf children of the Province and not just those who are able to profit from educational programs with minimal support.

We would like to express our appreciation to Mr. Alyward for his initiative in setting this priority to reopen the School for the Deaf. We were impressed that he took personal interest very early in his role as Leader of the Liberal Party of Newfoundland and Labrador.

The announcement of the policy to reopen the School for the Deaf is very recent, but we have already received positive comments from Deaf leaders and organizations not only in this Province, but nationally and internationally.  The reopening of the School for the Deaf would do much to restore the good name of this Province which was badly damaged by the decision to close the school in the first place.

We look forward to the day that the School for the Deaf is reopened and the recognition that decisions affecting the Deaf Community should be taken in concert with the Deaf Community and not by those who purport to know our needs better than we do.

"We recognize that persons who are deaf and communicating using American Sign Language share a unique culture and should have regular opportunities to interact with others who sharing the American Sign Language. We will work to facilitate these opportunities. Students who are deaf or hard of hearing are being fully integrated in the school system with their peers. Supports are being provided in the classroom to facilitate communication and learning."

Support NL Deaf Educaiton!

Last summer, the government of Newfoundland and Labrador closed the Newfoundland School for the Deaf (NSD). No consultation was held with the community. No experts in Deaf education were consulted. No warning was given. No alternatives were offered.

Deaf children in NL were shoved into mainstream schools without any support services. The Minister of Education stonewalled all inquiries and protests. He ignored the hundreds of Deaf education experts and consumers who expressed anger and concern for the children.

We are not giving up! We are working to raise funds to fight back. We want an independent inquiry into why Deaf experts, educators, parents, graduates, and consumers were deliberately excluded from the process that decided to close NSD. We want an independent inquiry into what has happened to NL's 199 deaf children.

Please support the fight for Deaf education and Deaf children! Go to this link: Donate to make an on-line donation to help fund the battle
